This weekend's project was to re-finish the hardwood floors in our two front bedrooms and hallway. Matt sanded to prep them all day Friday, and today we (yes, we) set about to stain them. The interesting thing about these particular floors is that they are tiled hardwood floors, with the grains of each adjacent tile going opposite directions. What this means is that you have to stain one tile at a time, as it's essential to apply the stain in the same direction as the grain of the wood (Which I learned when I had already committed to helping... you mean you didn't take Wood Re-Finishing 101 in college either? Shocking!).
Between the two of us, the work passed rather quickly and was actually a little bit of fun. We were just about the tape the plastic back up to block off the rooms so they could dry in peace when - out of nowhere! - Sam made a mad dash into one of the rooms! Matt barked an order ("Sam, GET BACK HERE! And turn off the closet light while you're at it"... haha, true story), then tried his calm voice ("Sammy Poo... please come over here"), both to no avail. Sam peeked his head around the corner, just evading our grasp, then retreated again. We could just sense him mocking us as he pranced around the freshly stained floors. Upon analyzing the situation from the edge of the hallway, we figured that the stain must be relatively dry even further back in the room where we'd begun. We gave up, left him alone, and, of course, he came sauntering out mere seconds after we walked away. Cats will be cats...
